BaZi or Vedic astrology: which should you read?
BaZi and Vedic astrology are separate traditions. Their calculations begin from different frames of reference.
What each calculation uses
BaZi turns a birth timestamp into Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. It reads the resulting eight characters through the Five Elements.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac with an exact birth time and location. It places planets in signs and houses against fixed stars.
Choose by the question
BaZi is useful for a question about elemental balance or longer life phases. Vedic astrology is useful for a question about planetary periods.
Neither is scientific prediction or advice on health, law or finance.
| BaZi 八字 | Vedic astrology 吠陀占星 | |
|---|---|---|
| Reads | Year, month, day and hour of birth, as stems and branches | Sidereal planetary positions and the rising degree |
| Says | Day Master 辛, yin Metal | Lagna in Gemini, its lord Mercury in the 12th house |
| Works in | Five elements in relation to one character, the Day Master | Planets in signs and houses, measured against the fixed stars |
| Best at | Character and elemental balance, and the shape of a life across decades | Timing, through planetary periods |
One birth, 15 June 1990, 07:30, Hong Kong, run through both systems:
The real difference
Both are old, both do timing, and they do it through unrelated machinery. BaZi moves you through luck pillars derived from the month. Vedic moves you through planetary periods derived from the Moon. They can point at the same decade for reasons that have nothing in common.
Both read your birth, so both describe something stable. Neither will tell you whether to act this week.
Which should you use
- BaZi if your question is about character and elemental balance, and the shape of a life across decades.
- Vedic astrology if your question is about timing, through planetary periods.
- Both if you want to know whether a theme holds up when the machinery changes. That is the only thing reading two systems buys you, and it is worth more than it sounds.
Meridian lets you choose which method to cast, from one set of birth details. Read one, then read the other, and compare them yourself rather than trusting anyone's summary.
Both headline results computed by Meridian's engines on 2 August 2026 from one identical birth: 15 June 1990, 07:30, Hong Kong. The engines are deterministic, so the same input returns the same chart.
This page compares how two systems calculate. It does not interpret a chart and is not advice.
