The real difference
Western astrology follows a question through house rulership. The relevant house names the matter. Its ruling planet carries that matter into the sign and house where it stands, while aspects show the pressures acting on it. In Meridian's tropical practice, the chart is read as a network of planetary responsibilities.
Qi Men Dun Jia does not trace a matter through planetary rulership. It places the question in one of nine palaces in the hour plate. The palace gives the field in which it is occurring. Its Door frames the available movement. The Star and heavenly stems alter the conditions of that field. Western asks how the chart's rulers connect the people and matter involved. Qi Men reads the condition of that specific matter in the present configuration.
These answer different kinds of question. Western astrology reads your birth and describes something stable. Qi Men Dun Jia reads the moment you ask and speaks to one decision. Comparing their conclusions directly is a category error.
Which should you use
- Western astrology if your question is about psychological pattern and motivation.
- Qi Men Dun Jia if your question is about one specific decision, right now.
- Both if you want to know whether a theme holds up when the machinery changes. That is the only thing reading two systems buys you, and it is worth more than it sounds.
Meridian lets you choose which method to cast, from one set of birth details. Read one, then read the other, and compare them yourself rather than trusting anyone's summary.
Recurrence across unrelated systems is not proof that either is true. It does tell you a reading is not an artefact of one method's machinery, which is the honest version of what comparing traditions is good for.
