Zi Wei Dou Shu or Human Design: which should you read?
They answer different questions. Zi Wei Dou Shu is strongest on reading separate areas of life on their own terms. Human Design is strongest on how a person is built to make decisions. Run on one identical birth they do not contradict each other so much as describe different things.

The real difference
Zi Wei Dou Shu plots twelve palaces from your lunar birth date and hour, then populates them with stars whose positions come from a lookup table, not a formula worked out by hand. Human Design builds its chart from two positions, the birth moment and a solar position roughly 88 days earlier, and derives nine centres from planetary activation rather than assignment.
The difference shows in what a fixed point buys you. A Zi Wei palace such as career or marriage holds whichever stars land there for life, and reading the chart means reading their interaction. A Human Design centre is binary: defined or open, on or off, decided by whether the two birth moments together activate it.
One chart reads as population, the other as circuitry. Both are fixed at birth and never redrawn, but Human Design's open centres describe susceptibility to outside conditioning, a claim about the person's relationship to others rather than a life theme.
Both read your birth, so both describe something stable. Neither will tell you whether to act this week.
Which should you use
- Zi Wei Dou Shu if your question is about reading separate areas of life on their own terms.
- Human Design if your question is about how a person is built to make decisions.
- Both if you want to know whether a theme holds up when the machinery changes. That is the only thing reading two systems buys you, and it is worth more than it sounds.

Recurrence across unrelated systems is not proof that either is true. It does tell you a reading is not an artefact of one method's machinery, which is the honest version of what comparing traditions is good for.
