Zi Wei Dou Shu or Numerology: which should you read?
They answer different questions. Zi Wei Dou Shu is strongest on reading separate areas of life on their own terms. Numerology is strongest on recurring themes, quickly and coarsely. Run on one identical birth they do not contradict each other so much as describe different things.
The same person, both ways

The real difference
Zi Wei Dou Shu casts a twelve-palace chart and populates every palace with named stars. A June 1990 birth puts Life Palace in 寅 carrying 七殺, and the other eleven palaces each hold their own stars in support or friction with it. Reading the chart means reading relationships between palaces, not any single position in isolation.
Numerology reduces the same birth to one number through addition. 15 June 1990 collapses to Life Path 4, with 13 marked as a karmic debt on the way down. There is no second figure to weigh it against and no spatial layout. The digit stands alone.
Twelve interlocking rooms against one irreducible digit is the gap. One system reads structure, the other reads a sum.
Both read your birth, so both describe something stable. Neither will tell you whether to act this week.
Which should you use
- Zi Wei Dou Shu if your question is about reading separate areas of life on their own terms.
- Numerology if your question is about recurring themes, quickly and coarsely.
- Both if you want to know whether a theme holds up when the machinery changes. That is the only thing reading two systems buys you, and it is worth more than it sounds.

Recurrence across unrelated systems is not proof that either is true. It does tell you a reading is not an artefact of one method's machinery, which is the honest version of what comparing traditions is good for.
